Wedding photography is fun times

So like I said……..I started doing wedding photography, and it’s pretty fun.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to handle it at first, with the fairly significant pressure of being that one guy who is supposed to capture what is probably the most important day in a couples life………….yikes.

However, like most things I do…..I jumped in head first, pulling on my life jacket as I dove.

I wouldn’t recommend doing that……it just adds to the stress.  I would recommend “playing photographer” at a friends or relatives wedding if you can.  What I mean by that is, take your pictures as if you were the “official” photographer, keeping in mind the expectations of the bride and groom.  Whenever you can, watch the official photographer, chances are they are a pro, and this is not their first time…….you would be suprised how much you will learn by simply watching an experience photog get down to business(just don’t get in the way).  If you do that and you still want to get into this racket then try to get hooked up with an assistant or second-shooter position with a local pro.  You will feel much more comfortable taking on a wedding by yourself if you have done either of those things.  Other than that……know your gear inside and out, have backups in case something fails, make sure you have enough memory (then get more), obviously you need to have a good solid understanding of the basics of exposure, flash, lighting, etc. You need to be able to deal with pretty much any situation……..and quickly.
